Frequently Asked Questions

What does “deadstock” mean?

Deadstock refers to inventory that was manufactured but never used or sold. These beads may be decades old but remain in unused condition, sometimes still in their original packaging or storage form.

You may also see the term “new old stock” (NOS), which means the same thing: older inventory that is new, unused, and preserved over time.

Both terms are used interchangeably in the vintage and collector world.

Are your beads vintage?

Many of our beads are true vintage, ranging from mid-century pieces to items approaching 100 years old. We also carry deadstock (NOS), modern destash lots, curated collections, and contemporary supplies.

Each listing will clearly note what we know about the age, origin, or category of the beads whenever possible.

Why do some vintage beads arrive with powder or residue?

It is very common for vintage beads to arrive with a light powdery coating or residue. This was historically used in manufacturing and packaging practices throughout much of the 20th century to protect beads from scratching, chipping, and damage during long-term storage and shipping.

In many cases, this coating has helped preserve the beads in excellent condition for decades. Unless otherwise stated in a listing, this is considered a normal and expected characteristic of vintage materials, not a defect.

Will all beads be exactly the same size and color?

Not always. Vintage and handmade beads often show slight variations in size, shape, color, and finish. These differences reflect older manufacturing techniques and individual craftsmanship.

We do our best to describe each lot accurately, but small variations are part of what makes these materials unique.

Do you combine shipping?

Yes. Whenever possible, we combine multiple items into one shipment.

If shipping charges significantly exceed the actual cost of postage, we may refund the difference at our discretion.

How quickly do orders ship?

Most orders ship within 1–3 business days unless otherwise noted in the product listing.

Are your collections one-of-a-kind?

Many of our curated collections, bead mixes, and vintage assortments are limited or completely one-of-a-kind.

What does a “curated collection” mean?

A curated collection is a hand-selected assortment of beads, findings, buttons, pendants, and treasures chosen around a theme, color palette, mood, era, or inspiration.

Each collection is designed to feel like a small story in beads.

Who is behind HeyBeads!?

HeyBeads! is a one-woman business built from a lifelong love of beads, color, and collecting.

Gwyn has been playing with beads since I was a young Deadhead in the early 1990s, and over time that hobby grew into a deep passion for sourcing, sorting, and sharing beautiful vintage and contemporary materials.

Gwyn personally curates every collection, photographs every listing, packs every order, and ships every package.

How do you know the history or provenance of the beads?

Whenever possible, we include provenance information for the beads we sell.

This may include details such as country of origin, manufacturer, warehouse or estate sources, or how the beads were originally packaged or distributed.

Part of the joy of working with vintage materials is uncovering their history, and Gwyn loves sharing those stories whenever they are known.

What if my order arrives damaged?

Please contact us within 7 days of delivery and include photos of the item and packaging if possible. We will work quickly to resolve the issue and find a fair solution.

Do you accept returns?

Please see our Shipping & Returns page for full return details. Because many of our items are vintage, one-of-a-kind, or curated in limited quantities, returns are handled on a case-by-case basis.

We encourage customers to reach out if there are any issues so we can help directly.

Are your photos accurate?

We do our best to represent color, texture, and condition as accurately as possible. However, colors may vary slightly depending on your screen or device settings.

Are you an eco-conscious business?

Yes. HeyBeads! focuses on giving vintage, surplus, and forgotten materials a second life whenever possible. Most packaging materials are reused, and we deeply believe in reducing waste through creative reuse.
